What is The Outlast Trials?

The Outlast Trials is a cooperative, multiplayer survival horror game from developer Red Barrels—known for their single-player horror titles, Outlast and Outlast 2—in which you take on the role of a patient in the mysterious Murkoff Corporation.

As part of your rehabilitation, you and up to three other Reagents (players) will visit unique and terrifying locations, such as a Police Station, Toy Factory, and Orphanage, to complete various objectives.

Upon returning from a successful Trial, you will earn credits to customize your character and cell, unlock access to additional Trials, and equip items and equipment to provide you with a fighting chance against the various enemies.

Is The Outlast Trials Scary?

For some, sure, The Outlast Trials can come across as rather terrifying. After all, developer Red Barrels holds a pedigree in uncomfortable, horrific experiences with their series of first-person horror games.

That said, I feel The Outlast Trials is the least scary of the series. The multiplayer aspect of the game helps relieve some of the stress, as you have others to fall back on in a time of dire need.

The Outlast Trials Tips and Tricks

At first glance, The Outlast Trials may feel overly complex. The objectives sometimes feel convoluted and challenging, but that’s part of the frantic fun that stems from what I consider to be one of the year’s best multiplayer horror games!

To help you survive the Murkoff Corporation, here are a few tips and tricks alongside our assortment of The Outlast Trials guides:

  • While you can play the entirety of The Outlast Trials solo, it’s recommended to play in a group of competent, voice chat-using players. You’ll find it’s easier to accomplish your objectives, deal with enemies, and keep everyone alive when you remain together and actively work towards accomplishing each task as a team.
  • Don’t spend your Murkoff Dollars willy-nilly on upgrades or AMPs you may not utilize effectively. Instead, especially when choosing your RIG, select one that benefits your group and playstyle. For instance, if you play more passively and aim to keep everyone alive, then opt for the healing RIG. If you’re more proactive and aggressive, then the Stun RIG can help you deal with tough enemies.
  • It’s sometimes more relaxing and manageable to play a horror game on a big-screen television without headphones. I don’t recommend playing in this manner for The Outlast Trials, however. Instead, wear headphones. The more you can hear, the better you perform, as many of the enemies in the game give off telltale noises, like grunts and footsteps, that indicate their intentions and path.
  • When you’re frantically running away from Mother Gooseberry or a Big Grunt, shutting the door behind you is probably the last thing on your mind. However, taking a second to slam the door in their face can buy you time to find a hiding place or sprint elsewhere.
  • You’ll find many valuable consumables scattered around each Trial, including healing items, antidotes, and the occasional brick/bottle to escape, distract, or stun enemies. I recommend keeping one throwable on you at all times, as you’ll undoubtedly run into a Grunt or Pusher and require a quick escape.
