What is Dredge?

Do you have a love-hate relationship with the open ocean? Did you read Lovecraft and wind up losing sleep over the possibility of Eldritch beings surfacing from deep within the black of the sea? If you answered ‘yes’ to either of those queries, then you’ll love Dredge!

It’s a single-player adventure focusing on fishing, inventory management, and some light role-playing game mechanics, like persistent upgrades and quests.

You play an unnamed fisherman looking to help the town of Greater Marrow with its dying fishing industry. You’ll catch various types of fish before unearthing more sinister happenings in and around the archipelago. As it turns out, the occult calls this area of the ocean home, and strange beings, creatures, and powers awaken to the sound of your fishing boat’s engine.

Where to Buy Dredge

Dredge is one of those rare indie games available on most every digital store in existence today. It’s available on PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch, making it widely available to anyone who wishes to explore the Lovecraftian fishing game on their favorite system!

Dredge Tips and Tricks

Despite its focus on fishing, which appears relaxing at first glance, Dredge provides players with a massive open world full of complex side quests, mysteries to uncover, and occasionally appalling fish to reel in with your rod. In this dangerous world, a few tips and tricks go a long way:

  • As you learn the mechanics and setting, there is no harm in turning on passive mode for your first playthrough or even just the first few hours of gameplay.
  • You’ll spend a lot of time fishing, so get accustomed to the fishing and dredging mini-games. They’ll both help you to progress through the story and earn money to upgrade your vessel.
  • Do not be afraid to sail forth during nighttime. The longer you stay out at night, the more sanity you lose, and the more creepy happenings begin to occur. However, some of the most rare fish in the game only appear at night.
  • Using crab pots, you can mark your map with points of interest, dredge spots (which replenish over time), and key fishing spots for rare creatures.
  • If you notice crows circling your vessel, use the fog horn to scare them away. However, using the fog horn at night draws in creatures and apparitions.
  • When you receive a new skill book, start reading it immediately, unless you have another active. You want the buffs provided by books.
  • You don’t have to sleep until 6 am. You should get in the habit of waking up earlier, as you won’t incur much sanity loss in the early morning hours before the sun rises.

The Guide Hall considers Dredge to be one of the greatest indie titles in the past decade, and that’s no easy feat. We’ll continue exploring this unique, mysterious, and sometimes downright frightening world for the foreseeable future!
