I thoroughly enjoy a well-paced single-player horror game that immerses and terrifies me to my core. But there’s a special place for multiplayer horror games like The Outlast Trials. I completely understand, however, that sometimes you want to go at it solo. Is The Outlast Trials single player?
Can You Play The Outlast Trials Single Player?
You can play The Outlast Trials single player if you wish, and it’s actually a bit easier in some regards. When playing solo, I found that I didn’t need to search far and wide for objectives; they were usually closer together. Then, during Trials like Kill the Snitch, there was only one generator in the basement to kickstart.
You also don’t have a helping hand should something go wrong. Let’s say a Big Grunt corners and throttles you to the ground; what then? You won’t have anyone to kick them off and help you up, which is unfortunate.
But the game offers a saving grace when playing solo in the form of Respawn Pills found inside the emergency medical cabinets randomly strewn about the map. I highly recommend picking these up when you see them!

How to Play Solo in The Outlast Trials
To play The Outlast Trials alone, without the help of a group, head over to the Terminal in the center of the common room, then select your Trial. You’ll note that you can access a Group Finder at the bottom right of the screen. Ignore this. You don’t have to group up with anyone before entering a Trial. Instead, pick your Trial and then jump straight in.
The game does not force you to play with anyone!
The Outlast Trials Solo Tips
- Even if you know the map, take your time. There’s no need to rush and potentially stumble into a Pusher or Screamer. Even if a Big Grunt is close behind, don’t panic. Just navigate the environment calmly, give them the slip, and sprint in short bursts when necessary.
- Unlock and use a Rig as early as imaginable because it will save your life. I started by unlocking the Heal Rig, which allows me to heal myself while playing solo or my teammates when playing in a group. It’s remarkably useful!
- A throwable can save your life, so keep one with you always. You can use it to distract enemies before they discover you, to stumble them if they do find you, and once you unlock the Self Defense Technique from the Pharmacist, you can escape a grapple!
