The Outlast Trials: How to Survive Toxic Shock Event

Let me preface the following by revealing my deepest secret to you. Despite my constant adoration for The Outlast Trials, I’m relatively terrible at the game. I love to run through Trials, enduring the scares and thrills as adrenaline rushes through my body. But I often wind up on the ground, waiting for a teammate’s assistance. During these Trials, I’ve learned a few things, however. Here is how to survive the Toxic Shock Event in The Outlast Trials!

How to Excel in the Toxic Shock Event

First and foremost, you’ll find that the Toxic Shock Event is a bit more challenging than the normal Trials. There are usually additional enemies, an invisible clock running in the background that, when it hits zero, releases toxic fumes across the map, and new objectives in each Trial. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed.

  • Find a hiding spot when you hear the warning klaxon sound in the distance. It’s the same buzzing sound that indicates a unique enemy, such as Mother Gooseberry, appearing from one of the elevators. However, it’s shortly followed by an announcement of toxic gas. The only way to survive the toxic fumes is to hide. Yes, even underneath a desk, which is open to the air, works wonders.
  • While moving through a Trial, keep an eye out for hiding spots. It’s wise to point them out for the entire team, as inevitably, when the gas seeps into the area, you’ll race to a hiding spot. If you don’t, the fumes cause permanent damage until you exit the Trial!
  • Keep an ear out for the telltale squeaking of a dying rat. There are a few scattered around each Trial, and you require 10 to satisfy an optional objective. You’ll earn additional score points and unlock unique props and cosmetics. Spoiler: They’re all dying rat-themed!

Additional Tips to Survive The Outlast Trials

It’s not enough just to survive the Toxic Shock Event in The Outlast Trials. It would be best if you learned how to survive everyday encounters with Prime Assets and Ex-Pop. You’ll help your team by knowing the basics:

  • Conserve your resources! Don’t immediately waste every empty bottle or brick you discover; the same goes for aid items. The fewer items you use, the more EXP you earn at the end of each Trial. But staggering an enemy with a throwable, like the bottle or brick, also boosts your EXP.
  • Speaking of items, you only have three slots in your inventory as a new player. You should focus on healing items, antidotes, and batteries to recharge your night vision goggles. You’ll inevitably take damage, endure poison gas, and use too much of your NV in dark spaces.
  • Keep an eye on your surroundings! Not only do enemies pop up through elevators, but new Ex-Pop will wander into an area after you unlock specific doors and gates. Furthermore, you’ll note that some locked doors have traps on the other side. If you open the door, you’ll receive a jumpscare and find yourself on the floor with a spike through your Rig!
