Following immense backlash from the PC gaming community, Sony and PlayStation made the timely and necessary decision to reverse their recently announced PSN account linking requirements for Helldivers 2.
Previously, PlayStation wanted to force PC users to connect their Steam to PSN. Unfortunately, this meant over one hundred countries globally couldn’t connect or play Helldivers 2; they couldn’t even buy the game, which led to mass refunds on Steam. Steam, despite its usual policy, took it like a champ. They began issuing refunds for players with tens or hundreds of hours of gameplay, which likely helped prompt PlayStation to back off.
Speaking on their official X (formerly Twitter) account, PlayStation said:
Helldivers fans — we’ve heard your feedback on the Helldivers 2 account linking update. The May 6 update, which would have required Steam and PlayStation Network account linking for new players and for current players beginning May 30, will not be moving forward.
We’re still learning what is best for PC players and your feedback has been invaluable. Thanks again for your continued support of Helldivers 2 and we’ll keep you updated on future plans.
This a massive win for the gaming community and small developers like Arrowhead, who want only what’s best for their game and its fanbase. You see? If we unite as players, not butting heads, we can ensure change within the gaming community!
Remember that it’s never okay to attack or harass developers or publishers. Now that the PSN in Helldivers 2 requirement is off the table don’t forget to change your negative review back to how support for Arrowhead!
