Bellwright: How to Get Wood and Logs

In a game about surviving and building up a settlement, one would expect to need a lot of wood. Well, you certainly do. But it’s not immediately clear how to get wood or logs in Bellwright, so let us help your budding community get its start!

How to Get Wood in Bellwright

Wood proves easy enough to get in Bellwright. It’s scattered all about the ground, especially around your starting zone. Likely, no matter where you place your Personal Shack, you’ll find wood nearby. They’re the twigs and sticks.

However, you’ll inevitably require a more steady supply of wood. Once you craft an axe at the Simple Workbench, you can start chopping down Young Trees. These are the thin trees you’ll find in lightly wooded areas nearby. Each one requires a few whacks with the axe, but you’ll receive approximately four to six pieces of wood per Young Tree that you fell.

Once you have an axe, a lot of new opportunities open up to you. There’s more to build and craft once you can acquire wood and logs. With an axe equipped in your inventory, walk up to a tree in the woods until you receive the interact button. You’ll hold down left-click to chop down the tree. Once it falls, there are typically three segments—left, right, and center—to break the fallen tree into three separate log pieces. It’s the same process. Walk up to the interact button on each section of the log, then hold down left-click once again.

To start, you can only carry two logs in your inventory. You must bring the first two back to your settlement, then return for the rest in a second trip.

You will note that some trees in the game require better equipment. You can typically tell, as the trees you can cut down with the starting axe are brighter in color and somewhat thinner. The old, darkened trees require a better axe to chop.
