Should You Beat Elden Ring Before Shadow of the Erdtree? – Answered

Elden Ring remains one of those gargantuan titles that you either positively adore and can’t get enough of, or you’re terrified of its immense world and challenge. Either way, you’re curious about what’s to come, right? Do you want to know more about the expansion? For example, should you beat Elden Ring before Shadow of the Erdtree?

Should You Finish Elden Ring Before Shadow of the Erdtree?

You need not beat Elden Ring before starting Shadow of the Erdtree. However, considering the ideal level a player should accomplish before beginning the expansion, you may want to finish the story beforehand.

To access Shadow of the Erdtree, you must first defeat Starscourge Radahn and Mohg, Lord of Blood. After beating Mohg, which may prove the more challenging fight, touch the cocoon in his arena. It will teleport you to the new lands.

What Level Should You Be for Shadow of the Erdtree?

While you may not have to beat the main storyline in Elden Ring before beginning the DLC, you should level a single character to an ideal point. That point is approximately between level 100 to level 150. You may wish to over-level a bit, so shoot for 150 to be safe.

However, remember that it can take approximately 50-60 hours to reach level 100 in Elden Ring. If you shoot for level 150, you may spend over 100 hours playing through the main story and world before accessing the new content!

Shadow of the Erdtree takes place near the end-game of Elden Ring, meaning it’s tough-as-nails from the get-go. Before accessing the new content, you must defeat multiple late-game bosses in the main story. As such, prepare for a challenge!
