Is Dead Matter Still in Development? – Answered

It’s heartbreaking when a game like Dead Matter launches into Early Access and shatters upon impact. Here is a game with so much untapped potential. It’s a zombie survival game set in Canada, which is quite rare. It offers complex survival mechanics, horde systems for zombies and—soon—animals, and a detailed, simulated environment. But it flopped out of the gate. So, is Dead Matter still in development today?

Does Dead Matter Still Receive Updates?

Believe it or not, the most recent news from developer QI Games occurred on June 4, 2024. That’s less than a month ago as of this writing, and in that blog post, they revealed the significant progress the remaining team is making on Dead Matter. But anyone can write a blog post; what about recent updates to the game?

On Steam, we can check Dead Matter’s update history. It reveals that the latest major update was the Foundation Update, which occurred on March 5. A hotfix on March 7 quickly followed this major content update. But more importantly, the Foundation Update offered countless steps in the right direction:

  • Appearance Customization
  • Hardcore Mode
  • Improved Server Performance
  • Cooking Mechanics
  • Gardening Mechanics
  • Camping Mechanics
  • Beds and Sleeping
  • Clocks
  • Trading w/NPCs
  • World Border Fence
  • Brand-New Locations
  • Lockpicking
  • Fluid Containers
  • Base Claims
  • Improved Gunplay
  • Animation Fixes
  • Weapon Optics
  • Interaction Icons

Overall, it’s a massive update with a lot of new content. Personally, I was hoping for more performance improvements, but I welcome any updates to Dead Matter. If the team doesn’t bail, it has the opportunity to become the first-person Project Zomboid many of us dream about nightly.
