Still, one consumable stands a cut above the rest. RimWorld luciferium is a potent and potentially dangerous narcotic in the game that is highly valuable and extremely rare.
Once colonists get their hands on luciferium, it’s often game over for someone. They’ll either succumb to addiction or fly into a violent rage against the first raiding party that arrives upon their doorstep. As previously mentioned, luciferium is scarce, powerful, and dangerous. It can heal permanent injuries and chronic health conditions, but will kill any pawn that does not administer a regular dose. As such, it’s a double-edged sword.
Effects
Luciferium has positive and negative status effects for colonists who take even a single dose. The drug significantly boosts movement speed, manipulation, and sight upon ingestion. It also enhances mood and offers pain relief.
Addiction
As a drug, luciferium is highly addictive. It’s one of the most addictive consumables in RimWorld, with a 100% fatality rate if colonists do not keep up with their doses. The pawn will become dependent, experiencing severe withdrawal without a steady supply.
Withdrawal
Speaking of withdrawal, if a pawn does not use luciferium regularly, they risk entering a withdrawal phase after five to six days. In the withdrawal phase, colonists will suffer from intense pain, decreased physical abilities, and severe negative mood debuffs. These can worsen over time and lead to death if not appropriately managed.
Limited Supply
As luciferium is one of the rarest drugs in RimWorld, keeping a steady supply for an addicted colonist may prove challenging, if not impossible. You’ll typically acquire luciferium via trading or in ancient ruins.

How Do You Get Luciferium in RimWorld?
Unfortunately, players cannot craft luciferium, at least not without a mod. In vanilla RimWorld, luciferium is acquired through trade, as a quest reward, looted from raiders, or found in ancient ruins.
As such, keeping even a handful of doses available in the colony can prove nearly impossible. If you have a colonist suffering from luciferium addiction, prepare for the worst.
What Do You Do With Luciferium?
Should you use luciferium in RimWorld? Honestly, it’s a last resort. If all else fails, such as when Randy sends one too many raids to your doorstep, then popping luciferium can keep your last colonist alive and in the fight. But as a long-term solution? It’s not recommended.
Instead, you’ll likely want to trade any luciferium you produce or acquire through other means to passing merchants in exchange for silver or more appropriate goods for your settlement.
