What is Toxic Commando?
John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando, developed by Saber Interactive and published by Focus Entertainment, is the latest horde shooter from the studio known for World War Z and Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2. This time around, players team up with three friends to become Toxic Commandos, mercenaries who venture out beyond the safe zone to complete objectives and destroy infected swarms.
Channeling the goofy chaos of 80s action movies, Toxic Commando features a massive arsenal of weapons and vehicles against Saber’s Swarm Engine. Pick a class, pop unique abilities, and square off against unending hordes of monsters from hell!

Toxic Commando Mechanics
Story & Missions
Toxic Commando is a four-player co-operative horde shooter in which players take on the role of mercenaries sent out into the semi-open wasteland. As players complete objectives, more of the story will unravel, revealing an experiment gone wrong, and now mutants dominate the landscape.
The Crew & Playstyles
Players take on the role of Toxic Commandos, criminal mercenaries sent forth for the lowest bidder. The crew includes Walter, Cato, Ruby, and Astrid. Each features a unique playstyle, with various abilities to use and unlock as the game progresses.
Swarm Engine
Saber’s Swarm Engine, perfected in World War Z and Space Marine 2, throws hundreds of mutant enemies at players simultaneously. An objective may appear lightly guarded and quiet, but noise and activity pull in hordes of enemies. Before long, it’s absolute chaos.

Beginner Tips & Common Mistakes
- Your character choice is purely cosmetic, so pick any one of the four that interests you most. However, class choice is not. Your class directly affects your playstyle, Special Ability, and role in the squad.
- Focus on leveling a single class before jumping between any others so that you always have one high level to fall back on for squad play.
- Sludge Seeds act as an auto-revive and, should you carry one through a mission without dying, will grant bonus XP.
- Take your time and explore the map to uncover points of interest with Sludgite, weapons, ammunition, and Spare Parts.
- Vehicles with winches are far more useful than those with mounted weapons.
- Focus your Sludgite on upgrading a single weapon before spreading it out over multiple guns.
