John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando allows for solo, sure, but it’s a cooperative gaming experience through and through. You can tell Saber designed every step with a full squad in mind. As such, I highly recommend you talk some friends into facing off against the Sludge God with you. Once that happens, send them this guide. We’ll help guide new and returning players with our handful of tried-and-tested Toxic Commando co-op tips and tricks!
Toxic Commando Co-op Tips: How to Play As a Team
Share Ammo With Your Pals
You can drop ammunition for teammates! Did you know that? I didn’t initially, but it’s extremely useful when playing as Strike (who carries extra ammo), and keeps your squad topped up before a wave.
Revive Downed Teammates Immediately
The longer a teammate is down, the more likely they are to remain on the ground for good. Every time you go down, that’s a life. You only have so many. So pick up your squadmates fast and get them back into the fight.
Call Out Vehicles

If you spot a vehicle that matches your mission, flag it for the entire squad. Someone could easily walk past a working vehicle if they’re not checking the map or HUD frequently.
Getting your entire squad into a single vehicle beats splitting up on foot every time!
Stick Together Near Objectives

While the game encourages exploration, many of the objectives mid-mission involve waves of enemies or tandem objectives, like in Root of Evil, when you must remain in the Access Zone to Maintain Transmission mid-way through the mission.
Spacing out gets people killed fast, so tighten up and work together before the horde arrives!
Always Bring a Medic
When playing on Hard or higher difficulty levels, bring a Medic. You’re in for a terrible time without one. The Medic’s self-revive ability alone justifies keeping on in your squad always, but when healing resources run dry on Very Hard, you’ll want that healing touch.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Toxic Commando have crossplay support?
Yes! Toxic Commando supports up to four players online with crossplay across PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. On PC, crossplay covers both Steam and the Epic Games Store, since Toxic Commando uses Epic Online Services (EOS) as its cross-network backend.
Can you join a mission already in progress?
Yes. You can join an ongoing mission and jump straight into the action. This is useful when hopping into a friend’s party late or queuing up for a public game on a mission you’ve yet to tackle.
Do you share Sludgite with friends in co-op?
Yes, you do share Sludgite. When playing co-op, anything you collect during a mission, including Sludgite and other resources, is shared across the entire group, so you never have to fight with anyone over grabbing resources.
