What is SurrounDead?
SurrounDead, an indie zombie survival game by developer Zurvivor, features realistic survival systems, scavenging and looting, crafting, base building, and visceral, tactical combat encounters. Set in a modern world undergoing a catastrophic apocalyptic event, the game challenges players to survive against rampaging undead hordes as long as possible. All the while, players must manage hunger, thirst, stamina, health, and equipment durability.
SurrounDead leans heavily into slow, methodical survival, rewarding careful preparation, situational awareness, and long-term planning by the player. There’s no rush. Scout the area, prep your weapons, and use stealth when necessary!

SurrounDead Mechanics
Survival Gameplay
When players spawn into the world of SurrounDead, they are completely devoid of useful equipment, armor, and items. It’s vital to explore the world, scavenge buildings and POIs for usable supplies, and fight or avoid zombies until growing in strength and confidence.
While gear is nice, hunger, thirst, stamina, and health tend to take priority. Players must find clean water and safe food items to consume.
Before long, it’s time to claim a base in the post-apocalypse!
Visceral Combat
As players grow in strength, with proper equipment and weapons equipped, encounters with the undead start to feel more trivial. From customizable firearms for high-risk encounters to satisfying one- and two-handed melee weapons, including hammers and fire axes, help players to cut down hordes of undead.
But with limited ammunition and ever-growing numbers of the undead roaming the landscape, every combat encounter poses a significant risk. It could be the player’s last if approached cockily.
Crafting & Base Building
Once players find a viable base, it’s time to plant roots. From window barricades to watchtowers, it won’t be long before a new haven pops up on the horizon.
Inside, players may plop down crafting workbenches to construct and repair weapons, additional defenses, and essential survival items.
The goal? Long-term survival.

Beginner Tips & Common Mistakes
- Prioritize Stealth — In the early game, when you’re bare and underequipped for the zombie apocalypse, stealth becomes paramount. Depending on your difficulty mode, zombies hit hard and, in an upcoming update, they’ll infect you with the zombie virus, effectively ending your run. To avoid an untimely death, prioritize stealth. Crouch-walk, find a ghillie suit, and give the undead a wide berth!
- Use the Environment — You won’t always have a high-powered rifle to snipe from afar. When you’re moving in on a point of interest (POI), ensure it’s completely clear by baiting enemies and zombies into tight doorways or around obstacles, like abandoned vehicles, to funnel your foes into a kill zone.
- Breaking Locks — SurrounDead is a zombie survival game, but it’s also a loot game. You’ll want to search every POI for quality gear and resources. Along the way, you’ll encounter locks. Bring along lock picks or bolt cutters to unlock safes, crates, and doors that may contain powerful weapon mods, better armor, and rare crafting resources.
- Craft Molotovs — Even on lower difficulties, a mob of zombies can and will end your run early. To combat a horde, craft Molotov cocktails using alcohol and cloth, then lead the zombies into a tight cluster before igniting the lot of them.
- Skill Allocation Matters — It’s somewhat hidden, but you can access your skill menu in SurrounDead by hitting ‘J’ to open your journal. In the skill menu, you have a few options, but prioritize:
- Combat Roll: Key to dodging zombie and bandit attacks.
- Health Regen: Passive healing keeps you on your feet longer.
- Lockpicking: Unlocks advanced lockpicking abilities for better gear.
