Choosing the Right Difficulty for You

If You’re New to State of Decay 2

Suppose this is your first time playing State of Decay 2. Welcome! You’re a little late to the party, but that’s not a problem because the game offers so much, thanks to years of updates and a passionate community.

All that said, if you’re starting your first community on SoD2, I recommend you start on Standard. It’s accessible, perfect for learning the ropes and pacing of the game, while still offering a slight challenge that doesn’t feel punishing.

If You’re Coming From Other Survival Games

If you’re visiting us from another zombie survival game, like Project Zomboid, you shouldn’t have any issues acclimating to the post-apocalypse we’re enjoying here. But still, you have questions, and I have answers.

In such cases, I recommend you play on Dread. It’s one step up from Standard, offering an accessible challenge that feels tough yet rewarding. Loot is somewhat limited, and zombies feel more numerous and powerful, but it’s not unfair. In my humble opinion, it’s the difficulty to play on.

If You Want the Full Roguelike Experience

If you can’t help yourself and must play on the most challenging difficulty setting in State of Decay 2 straight out of the gate, then look no further than Lethal. It’s unforgiving. There are more zombies, more Plague Hearts, tougher Freaks, fewer resources, almost no firearms, and your survivors are constantly suffering from morale penalties. It’s hell, but so damn fun!

FAQs

Does difficulty affect the story or ending?

No! The narrative outcome doesn’t change whatsoever between difficulty tiers, but the journey to reach the final mission and see it through does feel dramatically different.

What happens if I die on higher difficulties?

State of Decay 2 features permadeath across the board, meaning if a survivor dies on any difficulty, they’re gone for good. However, on Nightmare and Lethal, death incurs additional penalties, such as lost influence and weakened community morale.

Is Lethal Zone actually beatable?

Absolutely! It’s designed for more experienced players who have mastered the game’s mechanics, but it’s most definitely beatable.

Do difficulty settings affect co-op multiplayer?

They do, yes. When joining another player’s game, the host’s difficulty setting applies to all players. Guests should prepare themselves accordingly.

Can I import a community from a lower difficulty into a harder one?

Yes, State of Decay 2 allows you to import existing communities or survivors into a new map at a higher difficulty.

What difficulty do most players recommend for a first playthrough?

The most recommended starting point is Standard Zone. It’s accessible, provides excellent loot opportunities, and doesn’t feel overly unfair or too challenging while you learn the tension and pacing.

Does difficulty affect how fast Blood Plague spreads?

Yes! On higher difficulties, Blood Plague spreads more aggressively, and infections progress faster, while Plague Cures become more limited.
