Rust Naval Update Introduces Buildable Boats, Ghost Ships, Improved AI

As a Rust player with over 1,000 hours, I’m always excited to see what developer Facepunch is cooking up behind the scenes. In this case, it’s a massive content update that feels larger than anything in recent memory. The Rust Naval Update introduces the Deep Sea, buildable player-made boats, Ghost Ships, improved AI, performance updates, and so much more!

Rust Naval Update Overview

Did you check out the trailer above? It’s well worth a watch. But for now, let us dive into an overview of the Rust Naval Update, and if you want more, check out the official blog post!

Buildable Boats

Rust Player Made Boat

First and foremost, no more tugboats for you! You can now build a boat to roam the seas, including the new Deep Sea.

To start, plop down a Boat Building Station deployable in the water, ideally near or within your base, and use the Boat Building Plan to begin constructing your dream vessel.

You can add a steering wheel, anchor, sails, engines, planks, ramps, and even cannons to defend your ship!

Boat Deployables

As mentioned above, there are new deployables to help you construct your boat, including:

  • Boat Building Station: Used to build and edit your player-made boat.
  • Boat Building Plan: Similar to the base building plan, but exclusively for boats.
  • Sails: Toughened fabric rigged to catch the wind.
  • Helm: Used to steer and control the direction of your ship, with a built-in lock to secure your property.
  • Engine: A powerful motor that utilizes Low Grade Fuel to coarse speed out of your vessel.
  • Anchor: A heavy anchor to stop your vessel from drifting.
  • Cannon: A powerful naval cannon loaded with cannon balls to sink other players.
  • Small Ramp: A small ramp for a quick access point, such as when boarding other ships.
  • Plank: Force other players to walk the plank, of course!

The Deep Sea

Rust Deep Sea

Yep, that’s terrifying! Rust now features the Deep Sea, an offshore region only available when using boats. It’s a high-risk, high-reward zone accessible by sailing to the edge of the map with a player-made boat, RHIB, or PT Boat.

Out in the Deep Sea, you’ll find tropical islands, floating cities, ghost ships, and boats controlled by scientists.

Ghost Ships

Rust Ghost Ship

Speaking of Ghost Ships out in the Deep Sea, they’re brand-new and filled with loot.

Unfortunately, Ghost Ships are also protected by scientists, both on the ship and via nearby patrols. But once aboard, you’ll find locked crates to hack, and of course, other loot to score.
