Whenever we hear about a free-to-play game launching, one question arises above all others: Is it pay-to-win? We know that Once Human is free-to-play and will include microtransactions, but will they provide an unfair advantage? Is Once Human pay to win?
Does Once Human Have Pay to Win Mechanics?
Thanks to an interview with King Gothalion, we know from developer Starry Studio that Once Human does not include pay-to-win mechanics. They do not—at least for the time being—intend to introduce pay-to-win microtransactions. Could that change in the future? Of course, many free-to-play titles introduce boosters and advantages for paying customers to help support development.
Starry said:
We definitely don’t want to see any pay-to-win features in the game. There will be no pay-to-win. I swear to God, there will be none.
For now, we intend to take them at their word. After all, how many developers lie about monetization in their video games?

What Type of Microtransactions Does Once Human Have?
As far as microtransactions go, which will continue to support the game’s development long after release, Starry Studio intends to focus solely on cosmetics. They have several weapon, item, and character cosmetics in the works, and from what we’ve seen, they’re pretty high quality.

I’m a big fan of weapon and character customization, especially a transmog system. I can see myself picking up the occasional cosmetics in Once Human, so long as they’re priced appropriately. If we’re looking at Diablo 4 levels of microtransaction prices, I’ll pass, as I’m sure many of you will, too.
The Guide Hall can’t wait to dive in and explore the world of Once Human more, as the beta only provided a small taste. We’ll have day-one guides of this open-world survival game; that’s a promise!
