Yes, You Can Lower the Difficulty in Stalker 2 Anytime

I’m not ashamed to admit that I allowed pride to take charge as I set up my first playthrough of Stalker 2: Heart of Chornobyl. I immediately dove into the most challenging setting, removing the HUD altogether and eliminating any guidance the game offers new players. Don’t be like me because it’s mind-numbingly difficult. But hey, you can lower the difficulty in Stalker 2 anytime, and here’s how it’s done!

How to Change the Difficulty in Stalker 2

Listen, don’t be foolish like I was. Before I realized that, hey, you can change the Stalker 2 difficulty anytime you want by entering the options menu during gameplay straight from the pause menu, I was about to start an entirely new game. Of course, I still might, but for completely different reasons.

Once you hit pause, navigate to options or settings, and then under ‘Game,’ which is the first settings tab, select difficult about halfway down the page. Here, you can raise or lower the difficulty anytime you want. It’s pretty helpful in dealing with a particularly challenging point of interest. Let’s say you’re fighting a Burer and require some assistance; there’s no shame in lowering the difficulty.

Right, so when you start a new game, you can choose between one of three difficulty settings: Rookie, Stalker, and Veteran. Most will automatically choose Stalker because it’s in the center, right? It’s the default. But what you don’t know is that Stalker 2: Heart of Chornobyl is an extremely challenging, unforgiving game that doesn’t hold your hand, even in the standard difficulty mode. Here’s a rundown:

  • Rookie: Consider this difficulty mode the “story” experience, in which combat is toned down, radiation isn’t as damaging, and anomalies won’t kill you as quickly. It’s an easy mode that allows you to gain footing in the Zone before ramping up the chaos.
  • Stalker: As mentioned, Stalker is the default difficulty setting. It’s the “Normal” of the game, and as such, it does provide a challenge. You’ll find firefights deadly, anomalies deadlier, and radiation poses a significant concern to your health, Rookie.
  • Veteran: Well, you’re a tough one, Stalker. On Veteran, expect the most challenging experience of all, with your character taking additional damage, dealing less damage, having less ammunition to be found, and having no HUD or UI. It will test you significantly.

We’ve spent a few hours exploring the Zone in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl here at The Guide Hall, and despite the controversy surrounding the day-one experience and critics’ reviews ranging from exceptional to deplorable, we’re enjoying ourselves!
