Is State of Decay 2 Worth Playing In 2026?

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, State of Decay 2 remains one of my favorite games in 2026. I’ve spent countless hours playing, both solo and in co-op, and I can’t see myself stopping until State of Decay 3 releases. That said, I’m only one person. Many question whether State of Decay 2 is worth playing in 2026. Is SoD2 dead? Well, I’m going to answer those questions, and back it all up with totally objective facts and information. Right? Of course! Let’s dive in!

What is State of Decay 2?

Are you totally new to State of Decay 2? Welcome! SoD2 is an open-world zombie survival game that prioritizes community and survival over brain-bashing combat. You operate a small community of survivors, each with unique traits and skills, as you loot the surrounding area in an effort to not only survive but escape from the zombie-riddled land.

You choose who to recruit, where to settle, how to upgrade your base, what to bring on a loot run, what to bring home, and which enclaves to work with and which to eradicate. SoD2, as its core, is a freeform sandbox with replayability as a pillar, not an afterthought.

Is Anyone Still Playing State of Decay 2 in 2026?

Is State of Decay 2 dead? We posited this question in the intro, but let’s finally answer it, shall we?

The State of Decay 2 player count in 2026 isn’t overly impressive, but it’s not on life support, either. As of this writing, there are nearly 2,000 players in-game, and it’s early morning on a weekday when I’m checking these numbers. In the past 24 hours, the zombie survival game has enjoyed over 2,600 total players. Its all-time peak was almost 4 years ago, with nearly 23,000 players online simultaneously.

For a game that launched in 2018, that’s a healthy player count. And that’s not even counting the numbers on Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass. We don’t have access to those metrics, though.

What State of Decay 2 Does Really Well in 2026

The Community Sim Loop

I can’t think of many zombie survival games that place such a deep emphasis on the community aspect of the game like State of Decay 2. Its combination of permadeath, community, management, and open-world scavenging through an undead world remains distinctive. There’s a certain tension at play here, where you’re juggling resources and survivors who could, at any moment, die horrifically.

The Juggernaut Edition is Pure Value

On a normal day, without one of the many sales running, the Juggernaut Edition retails for $29.99. That is genuinely immense value. It includes all five maps, all DLC, and years of post-launch content updates. It’s tremendous value, and honestly, some of the best money you could spend. When it’s on sale, the game goes for less than $10.

It Runs Smoothly

Years of regular updates and bug fixes have molded SoD2 into a stable, smooth experience with very few noticeable bugs or glitches. And crashes? Forget about it! I haven’t experienced a single crash in hundreds of hours of playtime.

The game even runs well on mid-range hardware and, with a few tweaks to the video settings, you can play on Steam Deck!

Co-op is a Great Time

While I’ll almost always choose solo play, SoD2 offers co-op for those who prefer to bring a friend or two along for the ride. You can have 1-4 players, tethered to the host, running around the game world, looting and killing zombies. The shared tension of taking down a Plague Heart or surviving a special infected horde hits different online.

Where State of Decay 2 Falls Short

State of Decay 2 Nighttime

The Story is Thin

I know, the story isn’t the point here. It’s the gameplay. But still, the story feels thin. The survivors are functional, but they’re not characters. You could easily replace them and never remember the last. Missions are procedurally generated and repetitive until your final mission. And what story is there is told through radio messages from far-off lands. It doesn’t feel important.

The Loop Feels Repetitive

Speaking of those repetitive missions, while the game as a whole is entertaining, it does start to lose its luster by the midgame. The five maps all feature the same core gameplay structure — settle -> loot -> Plague Hearts -> finale. There’s a certain ceiling you’ll hit on how long the game feels fresh.

Active Development Ended

This is both a good and a bad point. Undead Labs is done with State of Decay 2, and rightfully so, after spending so many years improving and expanding the game. But now, it’s time for State of Decay 3. As such, don’t expect any big updates or new features; it’s in maintenance mode and nothing more.

It Doesn’t Ease New Players In Well Enough

Even with a prologue and years of patches, the game’s onboarding isn’t the best. You run through a few basics, but new players who don’t seek out a guide (Hey, how you doing?) tend to stumble upon problems and have questions, like those leading to preventable survivor deaths.

Should You Play State of Decay 2 Before State of Decay 3?

Honestly? We’re still a ways off from the State of Decay 3 release, likely sometime in 2027, based on insider reports. Undead Labs recently received additional investment for the game’s development, so the wait is likely longer than most expect.

All that said, if you feel you can wait a year or more for a community-focused zombie survival game, then by all means. I can’t. State of Decay 2 is out now, and it’s cheap even when it’s not on sale, and you can easily spend hundreds of hours playing through its multiple maps and legacy endings.

Oh, and if you’re on Game Pass, there’s no reason not to try the game.
