Can you imagine what it’s like to explore The Commonwealth—an utterly post-apocalyptic wasteland ripe with danger—alongside a friend? Not just a companion, like Piper or Curie, but a real-life friend. Well, Fallout 76 exists, but what about past games? Can you play Fallout 4 multiplayer?
Does Fallout 4 Have Multiplayer?
Unfortunately, it’s no longer possible to play Fallout 4 multiplayer. While the open-world action RPG never received official co-op support for multiplayer players, a small selection of community-made mods were available. These mods would allow you to play the entire Fallout 4 experience alongside another player from start to finish.
Were they buggy? Sure, but that’s the price you pay to enjoy Fallout 4 cooperatively. Unfortunately, the mods that were previously available are no longer available. Their support ceased altogether, especially with numerous updates to the game as part of its anniversary.
Using the Building Bridges player-made mod can create a sense of community. It’s similar to the notes found in Elden Ring or Dark Souls, in which players can leave behind a trace of themselves through helpful hints or taunts.

How to Play Fallout Multiplayer
You have options if you want to play Fallout multiplayer but are dissatisfied with the lack of mods for Fallout 4. You can play either Fallout 76, which is tremendous nowadays and even better when you play with a small group, or Fallout: The Roleplaying Game—a TTRPG with a surprising depth.
Of course, the latter requires you to purchase the tabletop game, with all the rulesets, boards, books, and figures to accompany a playthrough. Then, you must gather a group of friends IRL. Alternatively, you can score Fallout 76 relatively cheap nowadays—around $9.99 on sale—and enjoy hundreds of hours in Appalachia!
Speaking of Fallout 76, did I mention it’s quite good nowadays? The team working on the world’s first multiplayer Fallout is doing a fantastic job, especially with the most recent Skyline Valley map expansion. It’s the first time in the game’s history that they’ve built upon its map in such a way.
But even better is the upcoming Milepost Zero. It’s an all-new content update focusing on the Blue Ridge Caravan Company. It launches on September 3 and will allow you to build up a caravan company of your own, along with a customizable caravan outpost, nameable Brahmin, and legendary weapon crafting!
While a co-op mode in Fallout 4 would prove extremely cool, we think it’s a fine single-player game that doesn’t need anything tacked on. But a future Fallout? That’s where the potential for multiplayer lies!
