It’s the end of the world, and for some, life goes on. However, life may abruptly halt without access to knowledge and technological advancements. You have access to crucial research trees to help your colonists survive longer, but you must first learn how to research technology in Infection Free Zone!
How to Research New Technology in Infection Free Zone
You can access research in Infection Free Zone by clicking on the beaker icon at the top left of your HUD. From there, select one of the categories that interests you most, and then choose one of the specific research items within each technology tree. You can begin research if you have the correct amount of Scientific Materials.
But wait, there’s more! While it’s all good to understand the Technology Tree through the Research Panel, your survivors won’t start working on a research project without a Research Center. Like converting an abandoned building into a Shelter, you can convert one to a Research Center using the build menu; it’s in the last tab of buildings. I recommend somewhere close to your HQ. Have resources prepared, as the Research Center requires 24 Wood and 30 Raw Metal.
Furthermore, it does take time to complete research. For instance, the first project I took on, Basic Antenna, required 12 hours to finish.

The available research projects from the Technology Tree fall into six categories:
- Med
- Communication
- Chemistry
- Arms Production
- Construction
- Food
I recommend first focusing on Food, Med, and Chemistry. Your base won’t survive long on pre-apocalypse canned food items, so you’ll want to start growing crops immediately. As for Med, an encounter with the zombies always poses a threat no matter how prepared your squads. Lastly, Chemistry will allow you to unlock additional research and production opportunities, making it ideal for progression.

Where to Get Scientific Materials in Infection Free Zone

As mentioned, you require Scientific Materials to research new technology in Infection Free Zone. Like most other loot in the game, you can find Scientific Materials in structures throughout the world.
However, you’re unlikely to find them in an abandoned residential home. Instead, focus your attention on hospitals, medical centers, schools, universities, libraries, etc. Anywhere they would keep books and other pieces of knowledge before the collapse, you’ll find Scientific Materials!
They’re a rare resource, so don’t become discouraged if your first few trips into the wasteland don’t produce results!
The Guide Hall built a Research Center in the Infection Free Zone to hopefully stop the zombies from encroaching on our territory. We’ll have new guides for you shortly!
