I’m an absolute diehard fan of Gray Zone Warfare, having spent hundreds of hours playing the initial release and its subsequent content updates since. But even I can admit that Madfinger has its work cut out for it. Every major update, thankfully, sees vast improvement to the game. This update, Gray Zone Warfare 0.4, includes new weapons, gear, locations, an AI redesign, and, of course, bug fixes and gameplay improvements.
Madfinger is going all-in on making this update meaningful. There are new points of interest, polished environments, redesigned enemies, remodelled vendors, and more!
Regarding the environment:
- Added 25+ new locations, varied in size
- Added small biomes around the map (burned forests, bamboo forests, shot out forests, swamps)
- Rebuilt and polished existing locations with a focus on environmental storytelling and lore
- Redesigned the locations to reflect the particular AI NPC factions occupying the area and their specific lore
- Reduced vegetation around Combat Outposts and Points of Interest to improve visibility
- Redesigned FOBs
- Polished environment near rivers
- Added paths in the jungle
- Added variety to the state and searchability of buildings (open, closed, abandoned buildings)
- Introduced a wider range of interactions with the environment
- Added moon phases
And then, let’s look at the characters:
- Redesigned AI enemies into seven distinct factions, each defined by unique faces, hairstyles, clothing, gear, weapons, and carried loot (plus additional redesigns for FOB and COP guards, as well as Starter Town AI NPCs)
- Added new enemy bosses with distinctive voice lines
- Reworked and visually upgraded all PMC heads (16 heads in total)
- Added new apparel for players obtainable via Twitch Drops
- Remodelled all vendors

Lastly, it wouldn’t be a major update without improvements:
- Introduced manual bolting

- Revamped weapon stats to accentuate the impact of weapon handling, including aiming down sights, sway, inertia, reload speed, and weapon weight
- Improved ballistics calculations to better balance realism with gameplay and to make weapons and ammunition more viable
- Ammunition type now affects weapon durability, with special rounds degrading weapons faster
- The ammunition item detail now displays the lowest armor class that the projectile is not able to penetrate
- Bullet damage is now more clearly visible thanks to new hit reactions and limping
- Grenades have been rebalanced to better match real life
- Rebalanced helmets to offer more meaningful protection, with caliber and velocity directly affecting penetration potential
- Adjusted durability to decrease faster, encouraging players to reserve their best weapons for high-tier areas
- Added an “Attachment Interface” section to the Inspect window, showing which socket the items belong to
- Added new weapon check and reload animations for the most commonly used weapons and newly added weapons
- Improved weapon sounds with clearer directional positioning and seamless tonal shifts
And loot changes:
- Doubled the number of distinct loot, adding over 123 items (including new cases, food, meds, medical supplies, and valuables)
- Added 351 intel items (magazines, letters, posters…), 68 of which are lootable
- Increased the spawns and diversity of high-value loot to make exploring more exciting
- Adjusted loot distribution to:
- Create distinct high and low-value loot locations
- Match the location and container type, e.g., you are more likely to find medical supplies in an infirmary
- Match the AI NPCs factions occupying the locations
- Introduced junk items
- Added new container types
- Rebalanced stims to have weaker negative side effects
- Certain food and drinks now provide buffs when consumed, for example, coffee boosts stamina recovery speed
