In the beginning, your workspace is dank and dirty. You have access to a computer and little else besides a few funds to kickstart your empire. In time, you’ll unlock new upgrades through research, but getting to that point requires work. Here is how to research in Drug Lord Tycoon!
How to Unlock Research
As you follow along with the game’s tutorial segment, which doesn’t last very long, one of the final goals is to earn $5000 and purchase a Research Table. It’s one of the more expensive workbenches in the game, but infinitely helpful from start to finish. Once you earn the money and purchase a table, plop it down in the corner somewhere. You’ll need Skill Points to unlock additional bits of technology and upgrades.
With the Research Table in place, walk up and hit the interact button (left mouse click) to open the Research Tree. Here, you’ll spot two available technology trees, including Cannabis and Meth. As the game progresses through Early Access, two new production trees will become available in time.
Once you have a Skill Point, select the upgrade you wish to unlock and, in the bottom right corner of the menu, select “Unlock Tier.” So long as you have enough Skill Points, you can unlock the upgrade and progress further down the tree.

How to Earn Skill Points
Nearly everything you do increases the Skill Bar in the top right corner of your HUD. As it progresses and ticks over to a new number, you earn a Skill Point, which you can use to unlock additional upgrades at the Research Table.
You can earn Skill Points by:
- Planting
- Harvesting
- Drying
Unfortunately, you don’t seem to earn any progress for watering your crops or making a sale.
