Dota 2 has a lot of different Heroes. Much of the game’s enjoyment comes from trying them out and experimenting with team compositions. New updates constantly change the meta.
Today, we will talk about the Heroes I find the most difficult to play in 2024. If you’re a beginner, please try to avoid them as they require much practice.
The Hardest Heroes in Dota 2
Invoker

We’ll start with the most apparent Hero.
While it’s normal for a Hero to have 4 or 5 spells, including passives, Invoker has ten spells in his arsenal.
Invoker starts with three elemental orbs that augment his stats. His ultimate, Invoke, allows him to combine the elements to create different spells, from summoning minions to draining mana to going invisible. His spell variety makes him incredibly versatile but requires the player to have a firm grasp of his mechanics and a lot of situational awareness.
Using a spell is no longer a single button press but a process. This has rightfully made him one of the most challenging Heroes to play.
Chen

Chen’s main gimmick is that he can control enemies and neutral Creeps with Holy Persuasion.
Divine Favor and Hand of God allow him to sustain allies through regeneration and instant healing, which is nothing to scoff at. He can also slow enemies down with Penitence. It’s pretty useful if you’re focusing on the enemy Carry. So why is he on this list?
With no damage-dealing abilities, stuns, silence, or escape, Chen’s focus is to provide utility. Because his ability set is centered around supporting large groups, he has to build items focusing on team fighting, such as Vladimir’s Offering or Guardian Greaves. Controlling Creeps to push Towers, scout, or join team fights is nice. Focusing on gear that helps in crowd control is also neat. But Chen’s playstyle is all about sustaining his Creeps so the team can push, and if the Creeps are gone, then he’s got little to offer. And don’t forget that you’ll have to micromanage a lot.
His play style is such a niche that he’s viable only in specific team compositions. If you want to push the Towers with minions and have more offensive capabilities, go Enigma or Lycan.
Meepo

Meepo is another Hero that requires a lot of micromanagement—moreso than any other Hero on this list.
A disable, a nuke/teleport and lifesteal—the foundation for a Carry. Meepo’s ultimate is Divided We Stand, which allows him to create imperfect copies of himself. Clones can only wield boots, but they share his talent bonuses and attribute increases. With clones, Meepo can wither down enemies, obliterate Towers one by one or by split pushing, monitor the entire map and farm fast.
However, if one Meepo dies, all Meepos die. This means you need to be constantly vigilant over your clones. The death of a single clone can force you to restart your entire plan. The clone mechanic has understandably made him one of the higher-tier Heroes in the game—high risk and high reward.
Arc Warden

Arc Warden is another Carry that requires a good deal of micromanagement. That’s the trend with the toughest Dota 2 Heroes.
Arc Warden has abilities that help him kill enemy Heroes, push Towers, and offer map control. His ultimate, Tempest Double, creates a perfect duplicate with access to all his items and spells. Having a powerful clone opens many possibilities, like more farm potential, split pushing, and, in general, just adding a lot of pressure onto the enemy team.
He does not require the same degree of micromanagement as Meepo or Chen, but you will still have to split your attention if you want to make the most out of Tempest Double. Easy to learn, very hard to master.

Lone Druid

Lone Druid’s two defining skills are that he can transform into a bear and summon a Spirit Bear.
Transforming into a bear renders him into a melee-range HP brick, while his Spirit Bear can be used for combat or utility. What makes Spirit Bear unique is that the bear can equip its items, mechanically acting more like a Hero than a clone or a Creep. Twice the arsenal opens the way for many different item synergies and combat approaches. However, Lone Druid will have to farm twice as hard to get decent gear for himself and his companion.
The bear dying is a lot less consequential than Lone Druid dying, so players who main him often prioritize items for the Spirit Bear.
IO

IO is a pure support Hero. Io’s arsenal provides its allies with opportunities to progress or retreat.
Tether is Io’s signature ability. It allows it to connect to an ally, providing them bonus movement speed and a portion of any restored health/mana. Overcharge provides Io and the tethered unit with bonus attack speed, spell amplification, and HP regen. Spirits let Io deal damage, while Relocate lets it remove itself and the tethered ally from danger.
Io can torpedo the team to victory by supporting the Carry. That is if the team has a good Carry, who is farmed, and the player controlling them is competent. The best way to play Io is with a predetermined team since that way, you’ll be able to compensate for Io’s limitations.
It’s the same case with Chen, where the rest of the roster changes the Hero’s usefulness. It needs to be right next to its allies to be effective, requiring constant participation from the player.
Visage

And to end the discussion regarding difficult heroes, here’s Visage.
Visage can disable, push Towers, and burst enemies down with magical damage. His ultimate is Summon Familiars. Visage can summon two stone gargoyles for direct combat or simply scouting. His familiars come equipped with the Stone Form ability, allowing them to stun nearby enemies and regenerate health while invulnerable to damage. They give Visage more awareness, damage output, and a stun.
Visage is similar to Arc Warden in that the Hero is easy to learn but hard to master. With a low base speed, a single target disable, and a nuke that charges whenever Heroes take damage (meaning he has to be in the middle of a fight), and other units to control make Visage a tricky Hero.
