Should You Start a New Game With Stardew Valley Update 1.6?
You do not need to start a new game in Stardew Valley once Update 1.6 hits. However, you may want to. This is a major content update, with additional dialogue for most NPCs, winter clothing for each of them, quest alternatives for Joja, new items and crafting recipes, a major festival, and a brand-new farm type. The farm type is likely to coincide with the 8-player multiplayer support.
With all of that in mind, I recommend starting a new game. Overall, Stardew Valley is worth your time, and starting fresh to explore everything new will help ensure you don’t miss anything along the journey!

When is Stardew Valley Update 1.6 Coming Out?
Update 1.6 will launch on March 19, though that’s only for the PC version of Stardew Valley. According to its developer, the console and mobile versions will receive the update shortly after, but there’s no concrete release date for either version yet. We’ll let you know when that changes, though!
How to Download Update 1.6
Shortly after developer ConcernedApe releases Update 1.6, it will be available to download on Steam. You can navigate to your Steam Library, select the game, and check for an update. You can also visit the Downloads page by selecting ‘Manage Downloads’ at the bottom of your Steam client.
If you know the update is available, but your game is downloading anything new, try this:
- Right-click Stardew Valley in your Steam Library.
- Choose ‘Properties.’
- Select ‘Installed Files,” and then choose the bottom option, ‘Verify integrity of game files.’
- Let it run in the background. Once it is done, it will reinstall missing or corrupt game files or download and install the new game update.
