Following the inevitable Steam release of Dead Island 2, players now find themselves up in arms about the inclusion of Epic Online Services. I’m not a massive fan of the Epic Games Store, but this seems like an issue that is being blown out of proportion entirely. So, do you need EOS to play Dead Island 2 on Steam?
Does Dead Island 2 Require EOS on Steam?
While Dead Island 2 does include Epic Online Services, it does not require the Epic Games Launcher. Furthermore, it’s entirely optional. You must only enable EOS in-game if you wish to crossplay with EGS players. It is not a requirement to play online or cooperative with other Steam users.
Is it annoying? Yeah, of course. It would be much better not to enable third-party services to crossplay with other players. Unfortunately, due to the backing from Epic Games Store, that’s the reality of playing Dead Island 2 online.
If you absolutely despite EOS, don’t enable it. You don’t have to play with the handful of people still enjoying the game on EGS. It’s likely not many, anyhow.

How to Fix Epic Online Services Error in Dead Island 2
If you’re one of the few enduring the Epic Online Services error in Dead Island 2 on Steam, here are a handful of potential fixes:
- Uninstall and reinstall Dead Island 2.
- Download and install the Epic Games Store.
- Uninstall Epic Online Services.
You’ll want to search for Epic Online Services on your computer for that last fix. You can find it through Windows Settings or the Control Panel to uninstall the software.
Alternatively, some users report that the Epic Online Services folder doesn’t exist in their game files. It should be located at: SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Dead Island 2\EpicOnlineServices. If it’s not there, create a folder with the name “Epic Online Services,” then run the installer (EpicOnlineServices.msi) manually.
