BitCraft Online: Beginner’s Guide – Everything You Need to Know Before You Start

I’ll be the first to tell you that BitCraft Online isn’t the MMORPG for everyone. It’s a little more grind-heavy, second-screen-type gameplay that throws people off. But if you vibe with the idle-style skill leveling and crafting, you’ll find an extremely welcoming community in an enthralling game world.

BitCraft Online thrusts you into the world of Starfell with nothing more than a magical Wisp to guide you towards new beginnings. But the game doesn’t hold your hand for very long. If you’ve bounced off the MMO in your first hour, or you’re trying to figure out what you’re supposed to be doing, this BitCraft Online beginner’s guide has you covered.

We’ll walk you through core systems, explain what matters in the early game, and help you avoid mistakes that send most new players back to their Steam libraries.

What is BitCraft Online?

BitCraft Online is a sandbox MMORPG developed by Clockwork Labs, currently in Early Access, with plans of a free-to-play full release down the line. It’s similar in gameplay style to RuneScape’s skill-grinding loop, fused with the ambitious base-building mechanics of Minecraft, but with a player-driven economy.

You won’t find NPCs selling starter gear. The game doesn’t hand-deliver endgame items. If you need something, you craft it, gather it, or buy it from another player. That philosophy runs through every mechanic in the game, and understanding that now will save you plenty of headaches.

For example, it took me two days to craft a full set of early-game plate armor. Why? Well, for starters, I didn’t have ten hours per day to drop on the game. But primarily, it took me so long because I had to gather every resource and component, smelt ingots, craft cloth, and combine everything into my armor piece by piece.

Don’t Skip the Tutorial

When you first start a character in BitCraft Online, you’re met with a glowing Wisp who acts as a guide through a series of Tutorial Quests. Follow along. The tutorial covers your first tools, crafting station, quest givers, and, most importantly, the game’s fast travel mechanics.

TIP

Set your Home as soon as the tutorial prompts you to. Your Home is your teleport anchor, and you’ll use it frequently. If you skip this step, walking back is a pain.

Understand the Profession System

BitCraft Online Fishing

BitCraft has 12 Professions split into two categories:

Gathering Professions

  • Fishing — Wield a fishing rod and catch river, lake, and ocean fish; leads to Cooking and multiple crafting chains.
  • Foraging — Collect plant fibers and other flora; one of the most useful professions.
  • Forestry — Chop trees and process logs/wood; every profession requires wood at some point.
  • Hunting — Provide pelts for Leatherworking and ingredients for Cooking
  • Mining — Extract ore for tools, armor, and settlement supply packs; easily one of the most in-demand professions.

Crafting Professions

  • Carpentry — Work with processed wood to craft furniture, components, and structures.
  • Farming — Grow crops; provide filaments for Tailoring and ingredients for other professions.
  • Leatherwork — Craft leather armor and supplies for tools and weapons.
  • Masonry — Work stone into building and settlement upgrades.
  • Smithing — Forges metal armor, tools, jewelry, and weapons from raw ore.
  • Tailoring — Crafts cloth armor and ropes for all tools.
  • Scholar — Produces knowledge items that boost power and support advanced crafting chains.

Do Your Traveler Tasks Every Day

As you progress through the game’s tutorial, you’ll inevitably learn about Traveler Tasks. These short fetch quests refresh every four hours, and they’re the single best source of Hex Coins and Skill experience in the early game.

That said, most new players overlook them in favor of the main quest line. Don’t be that player!

Completing Traveler Quests consistently will keep your adventures funded and you leveled while you’re still finding your footing.

TIP

Quest Items for Traveler Tasks don’t have to be crafted by you specifically. If it’s faster to buy required materials from the player market, do so!

Reach Profession Level 20 Before Leaving the Starting Town

BitCraft Online Carpentry

Most new players that I’ve encountered wish to rush straight out of the starting town and into the wilderness. Don’t!

Profession levels 1-19 feel like a long grind, and they are, but they’re necessary. It’s like cutting your teeth. At level 20, you unlock Tier II, which unlocks meaningful progression mechanics that allow you to truly participate in a settlement’s economy.

Try to grind your primary profession (and perhaps one secondary one) to level 10 before you leave the starting area. Yeah, it’ll take you some time. But arriving at an Empire’s settlement at level 5 is just uncouth.

Learn the Compendium

I can’t even begin to tell you how useful the Compendium in BitCraft Online is about to become. It’s the most underused tool in the game. It’s:

  • A crafting encyclopedia showcasing recipes for every item you discover
  • A resource tracker that marks the nearest node of any gathered material on the minimap
  • A goal-setting tool that shows what ingredients you’re missing for a crafting recipe

The downside? Items only appear in the Compendium after you’ve encountered the relevant material or unlocked the recipe. If a recipe isn’t unlocked, it’s because you haven’t discovered the required ingredients, so go explore!

Use the Right Armor for the Job

BitCraft Online has three armor types, and each serves a different purpose. Wearing the wrong armor for your activity/job is a surprisingly common beginner mistake.

Armor Table
Armor Types
Armor TypeBest ForKey Bonuses
ClothCrafting professions Crafting speed Crafting stamina
LeatherGathering professions Movement speed Gathering speed
MetalCombat Defense Health Combat stats

If you’re crafting at a workbench all day, wear cloth. If you’re out foraging and mining, wear leather. If you want to fight hostile mobs as a defender of the land, wear metal. Having two or three armor sets stored in your vault and swapping between them is a basic efficiency habit all players should learn.

Understand Stamina and the Idle System

Stamins keeps the world of BitCraft Online running smoothly. Everything, from crafting and gathering to combat, consumes stamina. But even so, the MMORPG can run without you at the keyboard.

Once you queue up a crafting or gathering action, the game will continue processing while you’re AFK. This is its core idle-style crafting system, and it rewards players who plan.

What you should know:

  • Max stamina can be increased through gear (cloth armor, rings) and character progression
  • Active stamina regeneration becomes crucial at higher tiers—fill that stamina ring slot!
  • Teleporting home costs stamina based on how much you’re carrying. When possible, travel light. Even at zero stamina, you can fast travel home.

Join a Settlement

BitCraft Online Settlement

It’s becoming more commonplace to enjoy an MMORPG solo, and I get the appeal. However, at its core, BitCraft Online is a community-driven game. You’ll spend a lot of time chatting with other players, collaborating on crafting projects, or constructing entire towns.

Speaking of towns, I recommend you join a settlement. A player-built town pools resources, shares crafting stations, and collaborates on large-scale building projects. You gain access to high-tier workstations, along with friends.

To join a settlement, find its token in the world, click it, and look for the Empire Tab, where you can request membership. You can also ask in chat or via the game’s Discord to find recruiting settlements.

Use Waystones Wisely

The game’s fast travel mechanic is infinitely useful when so many player-run settlements exist across the expansive world, but Waystones have rules. Some key limitations to know include:

  • Waystones do not teleport cargo
  • Waystones do not teleport your cart, boat, or mount
  • Teleporting while carrying a heavy load increases the stamina cost
TIP

Use Waystones for scouting, quick trips to your home base, or reaching a market. For everything else, like resource hauling, just use your cart and enjoy the scenery.

Frequently Asked Questions

BitCraft Online Fishing

Is BitCraft Online free to play?

No. BitCraft Online is currently a paid Early Access title on Steam. It does not have a subscription fee, however, so you pay once and play.

Can I play BitCraft Online solo?

Absolutely! I play the game solo without any issue. However, I occasionally collaborate with the community or my partner when I need large quantities of resources or crafting that I can’t yet complete.

That said, solo players can still gather, craft, and progress through all professions independently, but participating in a settlement is required to access higher-tier crafting stations and the full extent of the game’s building mechanics. It’s a very community-driven game overall.

What professions should I start with as a beginner?

As a new player, I recommend you start with Mining + Smithing or Foraging + Tailoring. Every settlement requires mining, and Foraging is the most useful gathering profession in the game. Pick whichever loop sounds more fun to you!

How does the economy work? Are there NPC shops?

There are no NPC merchants selling gear or resources in BitCraft Online. The MMORPG’s economy is entirely player-driven, so if you require anything you can’t get yourself, you must buy or trade it via another player. Use the market system to find items listed and purchase what you’re missing.

What are Hex Coins, and how do I earn them?

Hex Coins are the primary currency in BitCraft Online. The fastest way to earn them early is by completing Traveler Tasks, which are a series of rotating mini-tasks that NPCs in the starting town provide. You can also earn Hex Coins by selling resources or crafted items via the player market.

What is stamina, and what happens when it runs out?

Stamina powers everything in BitCraft Online, from crafting and gathering to combat. When it runs out, you can’t perform active tasks, though you can still walk and complete queued crafting jobs. If you’re in the wild and run out of stamina, consider teleporting back home.

Is BitCraft Online worth buying in Early Access?

I certainly think so! If you enjoy progression-focused MMORPGs with a strong focus on crafting and economy, then BitCraft Online is absolutely worth your time and money in Early Access. It rewards patience and community collaboration, and you’ll find most players rather welcoming to newcomers.

The most recent major update included a full world reset and a revamped new-player experience.
