What is Bellwright?
Bellwright is a survival crafting game in the same style as titles such as Medieval Dynasty. You play an unnamed hero, a newcomer to the land in search of answers, inspired to found a rebellion and take on the Crown. To accomplish this task, you must improve your skills, survive the harsh wilderness, and build a settlement or two to entice villagers to side with your faction over the royalty of the land.
The majority of the gameplay loop in Bellwright revolves around gathering resources, crafting items, such as tools and weapons, and constructing buildings to grow your settlement from humble beginnings to a thriving city. Upon first loading into Bellwright, you may feel comfortable. It’s a familiar experience—the survival crafting genre. But the game proves it’s more complex than meets the eye almost immediately. It’s challenging to find key resources, and unlocking the next tier of progression feels arduous, making Bellwright easy to learn but tough to master.
To help you gain your footing in this medieval land, we have a few Bellwright tips and tricks:
- You’ll pick up a ton of different resources, and as your personal inventory is extremely limited, you’ll want to construct a few storage boxes around your personal shack. Then, when possible, sort your resources and keep everything tidy.
- As you start to recruit villagers to your settlement, keep in mind they require a lot of food. Right now, your villagers consume too much food too quickly, and it requires a bit of balance, so you’ll want to ensure you always have meat and berries in your storage.
- You have seven days before your first winter strikes, so stock up on food, keep a thorough supply of wood for your campfire, and consider camping near another village early on to trade with others.
- You’re quite weak in the early game, so fighting wolves and bandits poses a potentially severe hazard. Do not fight alone! You can eventually hire nearby villagers as guards, then recruit them to your party as a bodyguard. They’ll follow you to hell and back, so bring one to two along to deal with bandits roaming the roads or wolves haunting the woods.
