Barotrauma Calm Before the Storm Update Pulls Us Deeper

As someone with severe thalassophobia, it’s not every day that I willingly hop into a creaky submarine and venture to the depths of an alien ocean. Well, okay, it’s all virtual, but it’s still utterly terrifying to experience firsthand. And, thanks to the latest major update from developers FakeFish and Undertow Games, it’s about to grow larger and a tad bit scarier. Barotrauma Calm Before the Storm is a big one, so let’s dive in!

When Can You Play Barotrauma Calm Before the Storm?

Hey, there’s no need to wait impatiently! Barotrauma‘s Calm Before the Storm content update is available now via the Steam main branch. You can restart Steam if the update doesn’t appear, or just wait patiently, as your game will update on its own!

What’s New in the Barotrauma Calm Before the Storm Update?

There’s a lot to take in here, but perhaps the most exciting new feature for this major content update, in my humble opinion, is the Alien Ruins. There are three new ruin modules, along with an additional mission, that urge you to dive deeper and explore more. That’s a big win!

Key Features

  • Reserve Bench for Permadeath Mode: Players can now recruit bots into reserve and bring them into action when needed — a long-requested addition that also works in standard campaigns.
  • Alien Ruins & Mission: Explore three new ruin modules and take on the “Lost in Ruins” mission, which encourages deeper exploration of alien remains.
  • New PvP Outpost: An alien ruin-themed outpost has been added to the “Outpost Deathmatch” mode for more variety in player-versus-player encounters.
  • Loading Screens & Visual Enhancements: Updated level backgrounds and new loading screen artwork add to the game’s atmosphere and immersion.
  • Expanded Abandoned Outposts: 14 new modules for abandoned outposts have been added, created by longtime community modder NotWendy.

Gameplay and System Improvements

  • Radiation Balancing: Jovian radiation is now less punishing early on and more dangerous in later stages. Some creatures will benefit from radiation exposure, increasing the threat level.
  • Submarine touch-ups: Reworked the Remora, plus smaller tweaks for the Kastrull and Winterhalter subs.
  • Bot AI refinement: Fixes for ladders, targeting, fire response, and more improve the bot experience significantly.
  • Performance & Bug Fixes: Various optimizations and technical improvements across the board.
