Amnesia: The Bunker – How to Deal With the Stalker

Amnesia: The Bunker is the latest and most difficult installment in the Amnesia franchise. Set during the First World War, players assume the role of French soldier Henri Clément. Left to die in a bunker situated within No Man’s Land, Henri tries to escape while being hunted by an unstoppable monstrosity known as the Stalker.

This guide will discuss how players can survive against the monster.

KEEP THE GENERATOR RUNNING

The most important thing to remember is that the Stalker doesn’t like light. As long as the bunker’s generator is running and the lights are on, the Stalker won’t freely roam. Use the stopwatch to see how long until the power runs out, and refuel the generator whenever possible. Your flashlight has a short duration, and charging it is loud, so be weary about roaming in the dark.

IS THE STALKER NEARBY?

You can tell the Stalker is close by the following:

  • If it’s hiding inside a hole, it’ll make noise, and dust will come out. Sometimes it will even reach out with its arm. Passing a hole it is hiding in will cause it to attack, sometimes resulting in an instant death.
  • You’ll hear Henri’s heartbeat.
  • The lights will begin to flicker, which is a good indicator of which section of the map he’s in.
  • Staring directly at the creature will create visual distortion.
  • Rats will cower whenever the Stalker comes close to them.
  • The music will change, and the Stalker’s theme will play immediately once he commences a chase.
  • The Stalker will bellow whenever it spots the player.

Turning on directional captions will also help players know when and where the creature spawns.

NOISE MATTERS

The creature will react to noise. Whenever it hears a noise, it will scamper to the closest wall hole and wait there—noise such as moving items, running, breaking items, recharging the flashlight, gunfire, and explosions. Continuing to make noise in its area will eventually cause it to emerge, with loud noises such as gunfire and explosions causing it to emerge immediately. This is tricky since bullets and explosives can destroy some obstacles. Whenever it spawns, it’ll make a distinct guttural sound.

BLOCK ENTRY POINTS

When the lights are active, the Stalker’s primary mode of transportation is via the walls, spawning from openings. Players should cover the openings with heavy objects like barrels or crates to prevent it from emerging. This is only a temporary solution, as the Stalker will eventually push them away or destroy them. Alternatively, players can use gas grenades to seal off sections. This is trickier, however, as without the gas mask, it will damage the player and potentially trap them. Use with caution.

LURING AND HIDING

Having the monster spawn does have its benefits. If the Stalker encounters a locked door while investigating, there’s a good chance it will destroy it. Use flares or other means of making sound to lure it close to you, hide, and hope it destroys whatever obstacle is in your way. You can also lure the Stalker towards traps, gas, and explosives. Like all Amnesia games, stealth is paramount to survival. You can peek from corners, hide in closets, and underneath beds and desks. You can’t kill the Stalker, but shooting it will hinder it for a short while, giving you time to hide or run away.

STALKER UNPREDICTABILITY

The Stalker is a very unpredictable creature, and a considerable part of the game’s fun (and horror) is adapting to its spontaneous nature. There are a few moments where the Stalker seemingly breaks its own rules or adapts to its situation.

Here are a few examples:

  • Instead of retreating after not finding the player, it will turn back to double-check or wait around the corner for an ambush.
  • Sometimes, it will even trick the player it is leaving by entering a hole only to emerge from it a second later.
  • Sometimes, instead of spawning in the player’s vicinity, it will spawn further away to ambush them.
  • Upon returning to the “hub” area, there’s a chance it will roam around the safe room.

One of the modifiers added to the game is “Increased Stalker Unpredictability.” This limits the audio-visual cues regarding the Stalker’s presence, giving players less time to react.
